MABT Initial Training (Level 1)

Level 1 This training is designed for therapists/practitioners to learn how to facilitate client interoceptive awareness through the delivery of an approach called Mindful Awareness in Body-oriented Therapy (MABT). MABT is an evidenced-based approach that combines psychoeducation, touch and mindfulness.  MABT teaches fundamental skills of interoceptive awareness and the more advanced capacity to sustain mindful interoceptive attention to somatic experience.  This approach is particularly useful for clients who are disconnected from their bodies due to high stress or patterns of experiential avoidance, chronic pain or trauma.

The primary goals of MABT are to learn to access bodily awareness through mindful meditative attention, to develop the capacity for sustained attention within specific areas of the body, to learn an inquiry process related to sensory awareness that promotes self-awareness and insight, and to develop interoceptive awareness practices that can be integrated into daily life to promote self-care and emotion regulation. To address possible challenges of learning to access interoceptive awareness, MABT is delivered individually to allow for a flexible and individualized approach to teaching.

Based on Dr. Cynthia Price’s clinical expertise and developed for research, this program integrates mindfulness, psychoeducation, and touch (from therapist or through client self-touch to facilitate attention to the inner body, i.e. interoceptive awareness).  While we include touch in the training program, we also provide instruction and opportunity for therapists/practitioners to practice MABT delivery without the use of touch.  This training is appropriate for professionals from various disciplines, including massage and bodywork, psychotherapy, yoga therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, mindfulness teachers, psychiatric nursing, etc.

Largely experiential in training focus, didactic and discussion sessions will be interspersed throughout the Level 1 training. Demonstration and role-playing will also be used to teach the material, and much of the experiential training and practice time will involve simulated provider-client interactions. The MABT approach involves the application of mindfulness skills in clinical practice, i.e. the capacity for presence and mindful attention to self and in relationship to client, as well as the work of facilitating client capacity for presence through teaching interoceptive awareness skills.  Thus, throughout the training, attention will be brought to deepening the clinician’s own presence and mindful interoceptive awareness through daily meditations and learning MABT practice.

MABT Level 1 trainings are offered in two distinctly different formats: the intensive 1-week retreat course, or the series course involving two 3-day modules over 1-2 months (e.g. 3 days in Nov, 3 days in Dec). Please read this description of what is included in this MABT Level 1 course, along with information regarding the recommended educational background to take the course.

Our classes are designed to be small (8 -12 participants) to allow for attentive support by instructors to practice and learning processes.
